Jeremy Rudin on his role as new Superintendent of OSFI

As the new Superintendent of Financial Institutions Canada, Jeremy Rudin is responsible for overseeing the regulation and supervision of federally regulated deposit-taking institutions, insurance companies, and federally regulated private pension plans. Stephen Poloz on the price drop of oil

In yesterday’s banking committee meeting, I had the chance to ask Bank of Canada Governor Stephen Poloz for his thoughts on the global decrease in the price of oil and what it means for our economy. It’s been a question on the minds of many as oil prices continue to drop, and Governor Poloz had some very interesting insights for us. You can watch his response in the video below. What’s Happening in Senate Committees?

cmittee-roomThe Senate is Canada’s first and best think tank. Through the Senate’s 16 committees, we review legislation and consider issues of importance to Canadians. Last year, we reviewed 48 bills, released 108 public reports and heard from over 1,700 witnesses. You can read these reports and watch videos of meetings at the Senate’s website.

Senate Banking Committee set to study digital currencies, bitcoin

One of the key roles of Senate committees is to study issues that may affect Canada’s long-term national interests.

As a member of the Senate Banking Committee, I’m very excited as we prepare to launch a new study that will examine digital currencies. Today the Senate approved the following study mandate:

That the Committee be approved to examine and report on the use of digital currencies in Canada and report on their risks, threats, and advantages by June 30, 2015
