Senators must now support changes to restore the public’s trust and confidence in the Senate. It is time for the Senate to review its current expense rules and procedures. On May 9th, the Senate Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration released a report with recommendations that will move us in the right direction. These recommendations will be debated in the Senate later today. I follow the current Senate expense rules, and I will follow any amended rules.
I ran to be an Alberta elected senator because the Senate is a valuable component of Canada’s democracy – a place where long-term thinking can be done, new ideas explored and advanced, regional interests represented, and important policy questions given careful consideration. The Senate’s value has been confirmed during my four short months here, and I can assure Canadians that the vast majority of senators work hard and are dedicated to serving with honesty and integrity.
As a member of the Senate and a member of Conservative Caucus, I am strongly committed to ensuring that the Senate improves its rules and procedures to ensure accountability for public funds.
