Representing Alberta in the Senate Committee on Energy, Environment and Natural Resources

Screen Shot 2013-10-26 at 1.33.29 PMToday I am pleased to share that I’ve been appointed to the Senate Standing Committee on Energy, the Environment, and Natural Resources. It is a great honour to join such an esteemed committee, and I’m proud to be able to represent Alberta at this table.

This committee has played an important role over the years in helping to inform legislation and public policy. For example, in 2012, it released an important report that laid out many of the key challenges and opportunities Canada faces in responsibly developing its resources to ensure continued prosperity.

During my campaign for the 2012 Alberta Senate Nominee Election, I told Albertans that if elected I would work to tell Alberta’s energy story and educate Canadians on the benefits it offers to the entire country. My first statement in the Senate was on the subject of securing market access for Canada’s energy resources, and I look forward to continuing my advocacy in my new role as a member of this committee.

Alberta and Canada have a tremendous opportunity presented by our endowment of natural resources, as well as a responsibility to ensure that the benefits are shared widely and our treasured environment is protected.

I am also proud to share that I have been re-appointed to the Senate Standing Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce. This committee examines legislation and studies issues related to banking, insurance, patents, and corporate affairs, as well as many other subjects. The committee has conducted major studies in areas as diverse as corporate governance, financial sector reform, and Crown corporations.
