Yesterday, the Senate adopted 11 new rules governing Senate travel and expenses. As per my statement last week, I supported these rule changes and I am pleased that they are now in effect. Senators must continue to work to restore the public’s trust and confidence in the Senate. I am strongly committed to ensuring that this institution improves its accountability to Canadians. The Senate must be reformed so that it can fulfill the essential roles of providing sober second thought for legislation and provincial representation in Canada’s Parliament.

To learn more about the Senate and its role in Canada’s democracy, I recommend two excellent resources from the Library of Parliament: Our Country, Our Parliament, for young Canadians, and How Canadians Govern Themselves, a more detailed review by the late Senator Forsey (1904-1991), who was one of Canada’s leading constitutional experts.
